Young American Teens

As a public service, I am publishing the following instruction manual for my forty-something peers. I hope you enjoy today's lessons.

Lesson No. 1: Emo (pronounced /ˈiːmoʊ/) is a style of rock music which describes several independent variations of music with common stylistic roots. As such, use of the term has been the subject of much debate. In the mid-1980s, the term emo described a subgenre of hardcore punk which originated in the Washington, D.C. music scene. Starting in the mid-1990s, the term emo began to refer to the indie scene that followed the influences of Fugazi, which itself was an offshoot of the first wave of emo. (Many thanks for Wikipedia for the definition).

Lesson No. 2: Yes, all of your son & daughter's friends look like this (and so does your child).

Lesson No. 3: Yes, they have changed their appearances since becoming teens.

Our son looked liked this several years ago:

Now he's striving to look like this photo.

Lesson No. 4: Remember that you are not alone and more importantly...

Lesson No. 5: Remember your own past. ;^)

Great post! Brought back memories of Samm's many hair colors and cuts. The "best" was the time she shaved her head to about 1/8 of an inch all except her bangs which were a normal length. She then dyed the back canary yellow with red polka dots and did the bangs bright lime green. I had to keep telling myself it is only hair; it could be worse.

OH LORDY...please tell me you took a picture of it! I'd really love to see how it compares to Emo (and you get the distinct pleasure of waving the photo in Samm's face saying, "You have a daughter now!").

Heh... you two!
Gee, when I was 'young' all my parents had to 'worry' about was long hair, short skirts, patched jeans (jean skirts too)... oh yeah, and pot and lsd.. mushrooms, peyote, mescaline... but no make up, au naturale.... as in no bras, heeeee.

I don't remember my kids ever looking 'different'... Havala had the atomic bomb bangs for a couple of years when she was in middle school... the boys had long hair, like THAT was odd for me, hah. I guess I got off fairly easy... sorrrrry :^)

Oh that was a great post ...you won't want to hear this but I thought your son was a girl ( he is quite pretty !). I heard about "Emos" in St. Trins and had to consult Holly about what it meant . Being older I missed that 1980's look , by then I was all Laura Ashley and in my teens I went from hippy to a punk. When I met Jeff I was all black jeans and shocking pink everything but was well into my Laura Ashley phase . I did have my hair sprayed blue when in my early Roxy phase ( 1972) ....you'd be going to junior school I am guessing !!!

Brain back in action ..that's your son's role model right ? Oh dear it was before my first cup of tea . Is he going for the eye-liner ? To think I want my daughter to rebel and stop looking like she's having an audition for a Film Noir !!

Actually (and in truth), my kids aren't very Emo looking (yet). They're heading in that direction and my son refuses to cut his hair. He had his sister straighten it one morning so that hanged flat over his eyes. One of his friends called him "Cousin It" and that seemed to end the flat iron phase for him right there.
Andriana's discovered black eyeliner now. One of the things that amazes me is that all of their friends are either Emo or what we could consider "hippy looking." It's one or the other and it amuses me to no end. Oh...and they think they're original. Punk (aka Emo) came along in our day, as did Hippy/Grunge.
